WILD DOUGLAS COUNTY by Ken Lassman
This winner of an Elizabeth Schultz Award will be featured at a book signing Sept. 23, 2007, 2:30 pm at the Lawrence Public Library! It will be a beautifully produced book with many illustrations. Pre-order information is available through mammothpubs@hotmail.com. Here is Lassman's purpose in writing this book: "This book is about peeling back the layers of agreed-upon social convention, artificial boundaries, and human technologies that have paradoxically made [Douglas County] largely invisible. Because just as a road atlas doesn’t show the landscape that the roads drive through, our legally and economically oriented “Douglas County” ignores the very real ecological goings-on that are as old as the land itself and will continue as long as there is life on this planet. The result is that most of us are largely unaware of the amazing processes of the earth that continually unfold right under our noses. The ultimate goal of this book, then, is not to have this land join “Douglas County,” but for “Douglas County” to once again join the earth."
HASKELL INSTITUTE: 19TH C. STORIES OF SACRIFICE & SURVIVAL by Theresa Milk
This book, which includes WALKING TOUR OF THE HASKELL CEMETERY, is at the printers. It will be available by Oct. 1. Pre-ordering is available at mammothpubs@hotmail.com, $20.00 plus tax & shipping. ISBN: 0-9761773-8-2. This book presents student stories from early days of Haskell, a federal boarding school, with a balanced look at the ordeals and successes of Native students in a military environment. Dr. Milk's new research, based on letters, newspaper articles, and government documents, emphasizes individual stories. Close ties between Haskell and the KU and Lawrence community become evident in this book. The cemetery tour gives available obituaries and registration information about individuals lost during the first years of the institution.
